Dahlias... Ok till first frost
« on: October 17, 2009, 11:41 »
Then the first frost completely kills them!

Two days ago I still had a wonderful display of my dahlias.  On Thursday night we had a sharp frost and Friday all my dahlias were completely frost-burnt, leaves wilted and saggy.

Oh well they were gorgeous while they lasted, and I'm definitely on the look out for more varieties for next year!

If they were tuberous rather than from seed, you should still be able to dig up the tubers and store them over the winter  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Don't seed grown ones produce tubers?

I've only grown from seed once, but I don't recall there being a tuber by the end of the season; just roots.

But happy to be contradicted by someone who has greater knowledge and experience  :)

There are 2 types of Dahlia, tuberous rooted and fibrous rooted. The former should be lifted, cleaned, dried and stored. The latter are used as bedding plants and should go on the compost. :D

Dig them up :) when they finish flowering or the frosts blacken them. If they have tubers dry and save them..if they haven't bin them :)

Actually I've been waiting for this to happen so I can lift the tubers and completely dig over my front border.

I have a couple of new roses to go in and my winter bedding plants (if I can keep the chickens off long enough lol)

Next year I have a better idea regarding spacing, so I'm definitley on the lookout for some different varieties :)

I had three on the plot for cut flowers. They've been in there for about 3 years now undisturbed. Apart from a covering of compost I've taken a chance and left them to it.

This autumn they've had to go.... taking up too much room and I can't eat them!

A friend of mine gave me some "Bishop's Children" dahilas and they have been great with their purple/brown foliage and bright pink/red flowers. She said they will have produced tubers so I will have a ferret and see if they have then keep them for next year. Well worth a recommendation.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Bred from the famous " Bishop of Llandaff "dahlia I believe. :D
