Getting Rid of old bramble hedge
« on: March 07, 2008, 06:40 »
We have just ripped out an old bramble hedge 33 metres long and approx 4 metres wide, the question now is - how do we destroy the remaining roots and also the ivy that was covering the ground and climbing through the brambles and trees, the hedge was 2-3 metres high

We have burnt all the wood from the felled trees and the brambles etc but are left with shoots - should we weed kill and then rotavate or just weed kill and then keep cutting any shoots that appear

Any help would be much appreciated

oh dear that sounds radical!  Brambly hedges are havens for wildlife so it's a shame you lost it all and the trees too :(

Half the hedge was dead and being stangled by years of neglect the trees had to go because they were on our neighbours land but hung over ours and they wanted rid of them, we are going to be planting alot of wildlife frindly bushes & shrubs to replace - we managed to salvage 5 trees - in the garden we have planted 70+ willows 12 polars + 60 hedgerow shrubs and 30 + asstd other trees - built a 12 x 8 metres wildlife pond - the ducks and geese have their own so they dont eat the wildlife.

The hedge had to go to encourage new growth - sorry!

So glad to hear that. Phew  :D

Not sure what would be best cos it sounds like you're gardening on a large scale.  I'd be tempted to weedkill regrowth rather than rotovating which could chop it up and multiply the problem.  Maybe someone here will have more knowledge of landscaping and will be able to give you a comprehensive answer  :D

I've always tried digging a pit around the tap root and taking it out as far down as poss.
Usually involves pulling hard and falling on my backside.

Otherwise what compostqueen said. Paint the new stuff until it rolls over and dies.

I've just cut out some old brambles (tho' not on your scale  ) which were swamping some derelict goosegogs.

Where possible, I'm digging out the bramble roots completely.  In some places that's not possible so I will simply carry on cutting off any shoots.  I guess it will be a perennial battle...  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I get brambles coming up in my plot so when I see em I just pull em out.  I replanted a couple in the lotty hedge as I love blackberries - don't we all  :D

I bought a posh new blackberry and it's orrible. Yak. So hoping the replanted wild ones get going sharpish  :D
