Clematis
« on: May 21, 2009, 22:51 »
Can anyone tell me how to propagate a clematis. Montana Elizabeth is the one I have in mind.

Would it root if I pegged a shoot into a pot, still attached to the mother plant of course. If so how long does it take to root.

Thanks Peeps

C.montana roots easily from layers this time of year.
Use young vigorous shoots
Make a cut along the length of the stem and through a node ( perhaps 2in long )
Use a bent wire to peg down in  a 10cm pot of John Innes compost sunk into the ground

Alternately prepare a piece of ground with the addition of compost and grit and layer a longer section of stem ( serpentine layering as usually snaked backwards and forward )

Either way should begin to root in a few weeks, make sure it doesn't dry out
Cut from mother plant and move early autumn

Good luck
