Podding broad beans
« on: July 01, 2018, 16:49 »
A perennial problem with me. I just spent a boring hour podding a bucket-full to create maybe half a pound of beans to cook. Has anyone found any short-cuts? Anyone any idea how commercial caterers go about it?

No ideal.  Plonk yourself in front of the telly and sit and process them watching something you like.  Before you know, they are all done. :D

And then give your fingernails a good scrub with toothpaste to get all the black off them, especially down the sides of your cuticles

Never had a problem and enjoy it, just sit on the patio, watching or listening to something on the tablet and just pod away.
Find them easy to pod to be honest.

I like doing that job as well, I love the feel of the velvety insides.  I think its really relaxing (until I remember this years total disaster.  So it will be supermarket podding for me.  regards, Mrs Bouquet

Tell the kids you found a pearl in one once and sold it for £50.

As it happens I saw on one of these crowd funding vids a machine that did peas, beans, it skinned oranges and all sorts of fruit n veg, no idea on the cost but it looked good, they were making them for a pro kitchen so I guess a bit pricey.

One advantage of my reduced broad bean crop this year is that I haven't (yet at least) succumbed to 'broad bean thumb'. I've a dozen or so later plants that are just starting to produce  pods so I'm not counting my chickens just yet......
