Woke up this morning after a full night of rain, still going strong this morning.... Checked my container carrots, and something rather strange greeted me....

Just stalks.  All the nice fluffy leaves are gone, there is nothing but green stalks!

Who or what has happened?

Slugs or birds probably.  Were they netted ?

It's the first time that I've discovered disappearing carrot tops ever. 

In went the seed - up came the lovely little green shoots - on went the water (as it was dry) and then.....

Next visit.... where's the carrots??   

Slugs? maybe
Birds? perhaps

What ever it is - on my plot it's a first. 

Fortunately I now have three good rows of carrots but the 4th was a disappearing act!!

I would be shocked if it was slugs or birds to be honest.

Never known birds be out in the pouring rain or that close to my windows.

Slugs? They would have to get past the pellets, copper tape and coconut hair to get to my carrots.....

It's all a mystery.  I think I am destined never to grow a carrot! <giggle>

Slugs?? They've never fiddled with my carrots before and I've never used slug bait or anything else to keep them away before.

Birds? Some of the seed row was covered so unless it was a very low hopping / crawling bird I discount that culprit too.

Perhaps it was Australian carrot seed in my case? Maybe the green bits are sticking down instead of up?

wabbitz ?

Very short sighted wabbitz - maybe. But if I'd been a wabbit on my plot I'd have gone for the much bigger, sweeter, yummier looking larger carrots a few metres away rather than nibble the mini (just up) seedlings.

Well, some wabbitz are weally unpwee-dicatble I suppowse?  :blink:

Not wabbitz for me, my carrots are in pots in my garden on my window sill.

On the plot we have pigeons (its on their south of England flight path!!), mice (I trod on one today   ),  foxes and slugs but no wabbitz.... so I've no idea who has nibbled my seedling carrot tops...

Perhaps it was the mice / mouse?     There's one less

Had the same thing last year - suspect it ws a rabbit - evidence of burrowing under the mesh I'd put over them. This year am trying growing them in containers in the back garden instead of allotment.

Most definitely not rabbits on my plot - never seen one or signs of them in 50 years.
