I've got 3 hostas in separate large pots that I've had for about four years - they've grown really well and look very healthy, but I've noticed fine roots growing out through the drainage holes in the pots, so I guess it's time to repot. Question 1, when do I repot - autumn or spring; Question 2, do I divide it up and discard the central portion even though it's healthy, or can I just put each of them into a bigger pot ?(which I'd prefer as I don't really want anymore hostas and love the size that they are!). Potted hostas can be repotted anytime particularly as you're only adding more soil to a larger pot. Divide only if you want more plants but no, the centre section doesn't get tossed as it's not like rhubarb or irises which die out at centres. I worked for a hosta specialist and never encountered dead centres unless there was a pest problem causing it. Be sure to add some feed to the potting soil you add, such as BFB, composted manure, etc.
