Autumn onion sets - rubbish again
« on: March 07, 2011, 23:43 »
I must have put about 100 autumn onion sets in last year and now in spring I must have only about 20 actually putting up a green shoot. The rest have just rotted away. Only put sound bulbs in. maybe Cornish winter is just too mild so they rot rather than freeze?

Fortunately not too late to plant spring sets, but i don't think I'll bother with autumn ones again.

You may well be right about the milder climate, Zippy. Ours are quite happy sitting in cast iron for a few weeks.

It tickles me when we get asked about fleecing or cloching over-winter onions and garlic as I think that's killing them with kindness.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Interesting that my overwntering garlic is up and looking healthy and it is growing in the same bed so it can't be a soil problem I think.

My garlic is looking good, my overwintering onions are starting to perk up but did look very sorry for themselves after that hard November we had.
