Pictures of your Greenhouse / Polytunnel
« on: September 11, 2013, 18:49 »
I cannot belieeeeve that there isn't a sticky thread for pictures of peoples greenhouses and polytunnels (both internal photos of crops and external photos of structures). I am looking at investing in one this winter and would love to look at photos of other's for inspiration.

Maybe if there is enough contribution, some kindly Mod may sticky it!

Post away!  8)

We got ours in 2006 for £60.  I should have been 30ft long, but OH made it 24.  He didn't want it coming any further into the garden.

polythene needs replacing now though, as it is around 12 years old and very tatty.

 But I don't believe you, I think you have a proper sized allotment :)

12' x 10' was the first one, off eBay, for £200 IIRC.  Was planning to get a plastic tunnel for cropping and then a 30' x 10' came up on eBay for £400 and I decided that would be less maintenance than a tunnel.

Long wait to get one on eBay of right-size and close-enough to home though.  But I read of many people blagging one for free off a neighbour, or Freecycle, so worth being on the lookout. I expect many/most? allotments don't allow glass though.

Kristen! that's a lot of greenhouse!

Big garden, limited budget, do a lot of our own propagation for "features" we want. I take cuttings, or grow on from seedlings, about 1,000 a year ... we want Box edging, and parterre, and maze-like hedging ... costs too much to buy in decent sized plants in those numbers. I also grow a lot from seed - at least another 1,000 plants a year - to stock the garden with, or to grow as Annuals to fill in gaps until young perennials are big enough to take over.

Here's some Lavender which started out as less than 20p each from van Meuwan

Got a bit carried away this year (or maybe need to be carried off!) as this is what the terrace looks like.  I have a very long suffering wife :)

I'm just jealous Kristen that's all - of the size and the time that you invest in it.  A credit to you both.

By way of comparison, here is my postage stamp garden together with my raised bed and 6x4 greenhouse.  It may be small but it has lovely views and is south facing.  It's all I have time for anyway as I work full time.  This photo was taken last week when they were cutting the wheat and it started to 'snow' dust!

I've seen some amazing small gardens over the years - some nice surprises when we get the local "Our Town In Bloom" once every few years ...  I think if I had a small garden, and no kids needing a football pitch!, it would have to be crammed full jungle-like.  Although time was when I thought that just having a greenhouse with a collection of something unusual would do me ... that was in the days when heating a greenhouse didn't cost an arm and both legs :(

Actually I only have what the local council like to call a half plot 30 x 25ft    and that includes a small hedge on one side  ::)
so your greenhouses would cover a good lump of it

30 feet presumably, rather than metres!  Sounds jolly mean :(  Average size for a full plot is 250 sq.m. I think? which would make yours slightly bigger than a 1/4 sized plot.   I am guessing that your Council calls them "Designer Plots"?  :D
