Planting out pot grown asparagus
« on: January 30, 2010, 08:03 »
Hi
I have grown some asparagus from seed, they are nearly one year old and in pots in the plastic greenhouse.

When should I plant these out into their final bed?  As they are in pots should I just transplant or should I shake all the compost off to get the crowns and then lay them over a ridge?  If I just plant them how deep?

All advice welcome and appreciated!!

Not sure about the timing but this link gives general cultivation tips

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for the response. I already read the article but like many others it doesn't explain how to plant out pot grown asparagus?  I'm guessing I will just plant it out in April like any other pot grown veg?

Asparagus plants look like octopuses, with thick roots in all directions.  I would plant them out as soon as was reasonable, spreading the roots out as much as possible.

Remember, asparagus is one of the earliest to shoot at the first sign of warmth, so as soon as your soil is workable it is best to get them in the ground, that is always the case for bare rooted, although potted you have a little more time.

As mentioned, spread the roots out over  a ridge you've made so that the root crowns don't get soggy during heavy rains. The feeder rootlets can replenish themselves but once the crown rots, the plant is dead. For depth, try to put it down as far as it currently stands out from the pot soil, or a shade deeper but not by much. And be sure to clear all possible weed roots from the asparagus bed as its a nightmare to clear them later.
