As Richy says tartans were very plain way back. As more were designed they had to (out on necessity) become more intricate and colourful.

Most clan tartans prevailing today were 'invented' by 19th century mill owners as a marketing ploy. The wearing of tartan was prohibited after Culloden in 1746 (only about 100 years earlier). The first exception permitted was wearing regimental tartans in the Scottish regiments.

Originally tartans were somewhat differentiated on a local scale by the dyes which could be made from plants and berries growing in that area - hence the association with a particular clan.
