Tomato seed not as labelled?
« on: August 25, 2010, 19:09 »
I have grown Gardener's Delight toms for many years and this year used T&M seed.
They took much longer than usual to start ripening but I put it down to lack of sun.
Then I noticed they were growing bigger than usual and I put this down to a consequence of not ripening.
As they grew bigger they grew to a slightly unusual (round but irregular) shape but I put this down to the fact that they don't normally grow so big.
Now that i have picked a few I find that they have pulpy flesh, entirely unlike any GD that I have ever had before and precisely what I have never liked in tomatoes.

I can hardly believe that they are GD.
Has anyone else had experience of out-of-character growth due to the weather, or of wrong seed?

I have not had out of character tomato seed, but a few other things I have bought have not been what the packet promised.

I think that this is wrongly packaged seed.

I had yellow gardeners delight last year among the red ones from Fothergills. I emailed them photos and they sent replacement seed.

I planted the seed this year and 3 of my 4 plants have gardeners delight red fruit, although one plant has a different growth habit, and the 4th plant has red tomatoes but bigger and different from the others.

Probably best to go to another seedsman, although most of them seem to belong to one company.

the thing is that the seed suppliers buy from seed growers, often all from the same ones, so if they are wrong from one catalogue, they may be the same from another.

I had a problem with Incredible sweetcorn as did my plot neighbour, same variety and same problem, but bought from different catalogues >:(

I will send the remaining ones back to T&M with a complaint, although when I complained about some seed a few years ago I got no reply.
