Dammit (again) Marans boy killed
« on: December 06, 2010, 18:06 »
After chicken count this evening, I couldn't find my Marans boy, so after a 25 min search of the pen (chucking it down btw), I found his half eaten carcass :(

blooming predator didn't even finish him off - just ate head and neck, and the boy had a fine breast on him too.

I'm more upset that his death was a waste than his actual death I think... if the predator had just left scraps, then I could reconcile with the fact that it has been blummin freezing here recently and that food will be in short supply and therefore it was only trying to stay alive... but to leave the best part of the carcass...

And of course, he was a fine type, and now I'll never be able to breed from him *sigh*

So, once again I'm boyless... though I'm still on the lookout for a dark brahma boy for my three girls.

Oh casey, sorry to hear your news!  I can't understand why the predator would only eat the head and neck and leave the best bit.

Hope you find another fine boy soon!

so sorry Casey,  :( xx.
Perhaps the preditor got disturbed before finishing your boy off.
Staffies are softer than you think.

We had a fox attack some time ago, all the heads were bitten off, but we found them elsewhere in the garden.  :(  Having cleaned up all 7, otherwise untouched bodies, I was told that a fox will kill everything it can, then come back every day, taking a carcass away with it each day, so it does feel like a waste. They bury the bodies, one at a time, at their leisure over several days.   Nature can be so cruel, sorry about your maran. :(
