If I wanted to use one of my homegrown Charlotte tats as a seed potato, how would I do that.  Do I keep in fridge, or in a dark place for a while.  Chit or not to chit.  How long would it be before a thing (is it called a hullam) starts to grow from an eye.

I know you are not supposed to because of disease and all the rest of it.

Don't tell anyone,  but I did this last year with some of my Charlottes. I still bought some, as I forgot I did it. Never mind twice the quantity of them is not a bad thing.

With no special attention with a view to keeping them as seed spuds, they had sat most of the autumn/winter in our dark garage in covered cardboard trays. About January time, we were having a bit of a tidy, when I found them and thought they looked about right for seed spuds.

I selected about 18 of them & put them the right way up in the bottom of egg cartons. (Don't use plastic ones). These were then placed in one of the greenhouses where there is just enough heat to keep the frost off.

They sat there quite happily until planted in April & I've had a cracking harvest.

I think it was about in Februry time when the eyes began to chit, but if they are in a light, cool, frost free place, they won't make too much growth.
