2nd crop potatoes
« on: July 05, 2008, 10:19 »
Hi there

I was wanting to put some 2nd crop spuds in but have been put off by the price - however from what I can see on the web these are only 1st earlies that have been kept in a "temperature controlled environment".

So my question is has anyone just bought some new potatoes from the supermarket and stuck these in at this time of year with any success? As if so I will get some in.

If your earlies are healthy you can save a few small egg sized tubers for sowing in July/August. Keep in a biscuit tin or similar in sand in a cool place.

Generally autumn pots are expensive for the return, IMHO.

And supermarket tats are not certified disease free.

PJ is quite disease resistant but rather prone to blight, so watch it, but it will get blight for the free if it does.
