Raspberry and redcurrent problem
« on: March 28, 2011, 20:08 »
Hey guys
Just thought i'd ask for a bit of advice. I bought some raspberry and redcurrent shrubs last week, the new shoots where white and looked a little light starved. I've potted them up in largeish pots and popped them outside in a pretty sunny spot but i've just noticed the ends seem to be dying (going brown and shriveling). Does any one know what maybe causing this?
Thanks in advance
jenni

No, not too cold.  Both raspberries and redcurrants are bone hardy.  My vote goes for too dry.  It sounds as though these plants have been mistreated and don't have as much root as they should.  Hopefully they will grow some and recover.

I'd say too cold.
They might be "hardy" but they have also probably spent the last two years in a greenhouse.
Mine are potted on the windowsill and growing green like mad.  Planning on waiting till may or so to put them in the ground.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Sounds like the new shoots were etiolated - ie - not enough light so they would not be hardy enough to cope with winds, cold etc. It shows the plant is alive anyway so protect them in a light place and they should come through ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I appreciate these plants are hardy and once acclimatised will stay out forever! However, the white shoots would indicate that they have been somewhere dark and warm, probably stuck in a shop somewhere. Therefore if they are just chucked outside there will be some negative effects!

I bought some more a couple of weeks ago which were pretty much the same. Put them out in the day and brought them in at night for 2 weeks, now they look brill!

I've put a number of different fruit canes in that where bought from shops I have relegated 3 to the oh well just leave them and see how they go and the rest are coming through quite nice.

If plants were purchased in a box, then you must harden them off first. They simply can't handle full sunlight yet, just as human skin can't take hours of direct sun on the first day (you all know what sunburn feels like). Set them in some part sun gradually for a week and they'll improve considerably. And yes, they can also get tipped with frost in their weaker state.
