Sneezy Ex-Batt
« on: November 21, 2007, 17:41 »
Hi All
I know there have been a lot of posts about poorly hens and I've read most. just wondering if I'm doing the right thing.....

I picked up 7 new ex-batts on Saturday to join my existing 4 ex-batts.
All seem fine, although a bit worse for wear, apart from one who has been sneezing and has a running nose. Her eyes seem quite clear and bright but the could be tiny bubbles in corner of one..or i could be seeing things.

I don't want the whole flock catching this (hopefully they haven't already - the new ex-batts were sectioned off from the old ones but one does have an occassional sneeze) so I've separated her into a small chicken house away from the big chicken shed (realise that if she does get better I'll have to re-introduce her to the other gradually) She is very thin and not interested in food so I'm trying her with some warm layers mash but she's only having a couple of beakfuls.

I'm going to keep an eye on her for a couple of days and if no improvement take her to a chicken-friendly vet. I can't afford to spend a lot on her but would like to give her a chance.
Any other suggestions?

most of mine sneeze but the "snot" isn't a good sign, it could be stress, its good she is seperated in case it is contagious, just keep her quite with food and water and as stess free as poss.
someone will be laong to give you a better prognosis!

well done on saving them!! :D

You could give her some "Respite" which is good for colds.  But if it goes on for more than a few days she may well need antibiotics for secondary infection.  Ex-batts are quite delicate infection wise.

Antibiotics for a cold maybe? Thats what I gave mine. A few of them got colds when I first got them home, apparently the move can cause stress related colds. They were all fine after a couple of days. I am sure the very best of advice will be along in a minute tho.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Forgot to say - both the chicken shed and the chicken house that the poorly batt is now in have ventilation but no drafts! (I have been taking note of the experts!)

Thanks for all for the advice.
I've ordered the Respite - will try anything!
Will keep my fingers crossed that she perks up, she is a sweet little soul..

Hi there!

I think its the time of year for sniffles! I use crushed garlic and apple cider vinegar in the chocks water. The garlic supports their immune systems as it is a good anit viral. The ACV helps get their digestive systems working well. Also, have they been wormed recently? Worms can be quite an assault on them. Im sure you'll be hearing from munty soon - hes always got something to say -thats if you can decifer his posts!

My chickens had the very same. The vet could shed no light and treated one of mine as an eye infection. My chicken book says the bubbles are a sign of a cold and it has been contagious in my flock. It has caught me out because some of them have had a sneeze and no bubbles while another one has had the bubbles in their eye or both eyes. They all thankfully seem healthy now and are laying well and eating well. One died who I think was one who was originally infected and I had one put to sleep when both his eyes were painfully sore-having had the experience I did I would suggest swift isolation- the vets I visited are the farm/livestock vets in the area and although were very nice were not terribly helpful on a practical level.

Thanks guys, I will definitely try the garlic and Apple Cider Vinegar to keep future sniffles at bay.
The poorly hen is now warm and cosy in the living room (much to my husband's dismay). She has eaten a couple of small meals today but the 'snottiness'is getting worse..I can hear her 'burbling' in her sleep as I'm sitting here writing this. I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow to see the bird specialist. To be honest I don't think she'll recover and I'll end up saying goodbye to her but miracles do happen and at least she's had the chance to stretch, scratch and roost...all the things she couldn't do in a battery cage.
On a positive note the rest of the flock seem fine so I'm hoping I separated her in time. There is the odd sneeze or two but all are clear nosed and sniffle free
So pleased this forum exists! Thank you to everyone  :D

PS. I'm in the process of worming all the birds with Flubenvet...I'm not sure whether hens get wormed in battery farms??

Just an update - took the poorly hen, Lilac, to the vets yesterday afternoon and one of the partners took pity on her (she does look a state having been out of the batterycages less than a week) so they are keeping her in and giving her anti-biotics, fluids and crop feeding her. They aren't charging me any hospitalisation charges (very nice of them) so it hopefully won't cost a small fortune.
This will be her second night in there, got to call them in the morning and see how she's doing ......

All the others hens are doing fine and eating well...bit of bullying going on as the old girls are bossing some of the newbies about but no bloodshed so I'm hoping it's just to establish pecking order and it will settle down soon !!!
