Adding new chicken with others
« on: November 15, 2011, 15:55 »
Hi, Recently been given a sussex hen that was being bullied. She has been in a coop on her own since Saturday but my other 3 chickens are very wary of her. We let her out today and they all attacked her, wouldn't leave her alone. She went back into the coop to hide in the end.
Do I carry on leaving her locked away in the run on her own?

Please say it will get better as it is terrible watching it.
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi I know it is horrible watching them being bullied, is there any way that you can fence an area off so they can see each other, then after a week try them all together?

also it is best to introduce more than one - could you not find her a little friend?
Staffies are softer than you think.

A good tip is to put out extra feeding and drinking stations as this is usually where the conflict arises most. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I have found that i can persuade them if they have the hidden treats to look for. sweetcorn mash or peanut butter in one of those dog hide treats  help.

Not explained that very well but you can buy things for dogs to hide treats in. These work for chickens too

Hello there, i added 1 new hen with others they had little fight for few mins which wasn't too bad.. They were fine afterwords. Let her out for a day they'll get used to it.
The new hen was sitting on eggs n was away from the rest for over 3 weeks when she returned they had a little fight again for a minute or so but was all normal after.
