Can anyone out there tell me or have any information on hens that never lay and grow spurs?  I have had a few over the years.  Never laid an egg!  They do not turn into full cocks and do not have any male traights.  I call them my trannie chucks.  I have read about ones that do turn from female to male through hormones and then crow and cover the females but mine are not the same.  Any info would be interesting but will not be getting rid of as they are pets.

Quite common in fish and reptiles never heard of it in chickens though

A vet , Julia Roberts, makes reference to it in her book - Diseases of free range poultry.  Sex reversal in avian species, but this is very rare and effects hens that have tumers on thier livers.  Did not know if many of you out there have hens that have spurs and do not lay.

One of my hens cock-a-doodled once and has inch long spurs.  She does lay eggs though.
