Title: Hen died seemed to drown in own fluids
Post by: EMC on November 06, 2021, 14:49
Help! one of my hens seemed a bit lethargic this morning and then all of a sudden just couldn't breathe, gasps for air and then died suddenly then lots of clear watery fluid came out of her mouth. What could this be??? All other hens seem fine. they were wormed about 3 weeks ago. She was 3 years old. no changes in circumstances or environment. any advice welcome

It sounds like sour crop.  See here for some further information.

Thank you for this, although I'm not sure it was sour crop, I have seen sour crop before in one of the others and we treated that, and this liquid looked different. It was very quick, she threw her head back, gasped and then died. Like a mix of drowning and heart attack almost, and then after she died clear non smelling liquid came out. Could sour crop be completely clear and non smelling?
