About 10 years ago we bought 3 pampas grass plants, 2 died over their first winter but the 3rd just grew and grew until this year the base measured about 3ft.  Darling son decided to 'trim' the top until all that was left was a clump of dead leaves  he has inherited his dads gardening skill

We now have 4 green clumps coming out from the bottom and I was wondering if the middle dead bit can be taken out

I can't let my pampas plant get as large as it wants to for space reasons, so I have "restarted" it twice in 12 years using a rooted piece of stem from the outside, but if you want a bigger "plant" from the word go there's nothing to stop you planting more than one piece.

I don't think it's really practical to just remove the dead middle - you'd finish up doing the same as the above anyway!

I was thinking about replanting it around the garden Jay so that would be fine

It's interesting that in this part of the world Pampas grass is no longer commercialised as they escape into the wild and due to their vigour in this climate they colonise to the detriment of native species. Must say they do look  impressive when you see a whole raft of them swaying in the wind.
