Dwarf French Beans in Pots
« on: April 16, 2019, 16:56 »
I want to give my grandson some dwarf beans. If I put 3 in a 9inch pot will that be too crowded. If so how big do I need to go. He is 6 and quite keen. His little brothers are another matter so change of survival questionable

Never too sure if it the depth or diameter - but until I had allotment last year grew one per pot about 12 inch square and was successful. climbing French and runner beans 3 to a pot.

Could you increase the size of the pot to 12ins ?  Then 3 dwarf bean plants would be fine and have enough space to bush out a bit. They might need some sticks to help them stay upright

Sounds a lovely gift for a littl'un  :D

3 in a 10" flower bucket work pretty well so a 12" pot should be fine. Great present as Sunny says, and the only thing I could think of to improve it would be to use 3 different coloured beans.

Thanks for your answers, I will look for a bigger pot.
Good idea about the different colours, I will look into that. He will want a tomato plant as well, also sunflowers, the bigger the better  :D
The most difficult part now is explaining why he can't have them in the garden till next month at least.

I love dwarf French beans and until now have only grown the green ones, but this year I've gone for a climbing one (Cobra?) and got some Sonesta which are yellow and supposed to be just as tasty! Looking on D.T.Brown's website you can get seeds for green, yellow and purple ones though the purple ones go green on cooking. I look for taste and stringless so try this: https://www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk/Peas-Beans/French-Bean-Seed/Dwarf-French-Bean-Seed-Collection-3.html
The more you pick the more you get!

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
