Why are my red onions going to seed?
« on: June 04, 2007, 23:26 »
My red onions have been in the ground since the 03/03/07. They are coming on nicely, but a couple have them have gone to seed (got the seed pocket thing on top), they are not near big enough to eat, So what should i do? Why has this happened? Does it matter?

Pull them off.  Use the affected onions first

I planted my red onions close together this year and have used every other one as a spring onion recently. I read this in a book somewhere and it has worked well. So your bolting ones will be fine in salads etc.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

So, are you all saying that the ones that have bolted are no good, unless I use them now. What will happen if i leave them to harvest later?

I didn't say to use them now.   I said to remove the seed stalks and use them first.

Its said that if they bolt ie grow seed heads ,that they dont store well, so use them fresh from the garden , they will carry on growing but wont make a great size.

I noticed last night that one of mine had gone too. Will have to find something to stick in the ground and remind myself to eat that one first
