Signs of first egg?
« on: May 27, 2007, 16:17 »
Hi - probably been asked before but what are the signs a point of lay chicken is ready to lay ... we have just acquired six hens two weeks ago and the one who is normally first in front for food is suddenly last out of the ark and not eating.  She is currently sitting in a nesting box ignoring us!  Is she about to lay her first egg or is she sick?
Many thanks.
Loz

When they are ready to lay their comb will be a nice red colour and the will squat "ready" when you approach them

Hi  :) thanks for the replies so far ... her comb has gotten redder since we bought her and the others seem to be too ... she did 'lay' last night but it wasn't a good result.  I didn't see but my partner said it was like a 'flat' egg .... they are being fed layers pellets, greens, scraps and are running in a large pen with plenty of greens ...also with grit out for them ... could this just be a first attempt gone wrong for her or are we missing something?

Thanks Aunt Sally!  We have only had them 2 weeks and already I am getting very attached to them ... learning curve going on.
