Average price of Cream legbar
« on: May 08, 2012, 10:08 »
Does anyone know the going rate for POL cream legbar chickens?
I have booked two and was told that they will cost £20. They are now 15 weeks old which is at least 10 weeks off laying. Is this about right?

I think it is very reasonable if it is a good example of a CLB.  If only hatchery quality, then more like £15-20 :)

If it's £20 for the 2 I would grab them quick, £20 each is pretty much towards the top end of the price you would need to pay.

That is the thing themagicaltoad1. I'm not shure whether she meant £20 each or for the two. I'll have to ask her again how much each.  I saw them when they were 10 weeks old and they looked to me (not experienced) like a good breed type. I bought what I was told were cream legbars last year and they look nothing like the breed. They lay green eggs and I'm not complaining but I made sure this time (different breeder) that they really look as they should. What do you mean by hatchery quality Casey76? I think the ones I bought last year must have been just that.

See here for a "good" CLB : http://www.cream-legbar.co.uk/

Hatchery quality are often mis-coloured, with white or pale legs.

According to the breed standard, eggs may be green or blue, so better to ask the breeder for examples of the eggs if you really want a blue egg layer ;)

i paid £45 each for two girls(two years ago) and they were ment to be show standard ......lets just say one is a cross between cream legbar  and silki..........................was very angry however now the cross has turned into a cracking broody and good egg layer even if they are small (but laid 237eggs last year and hatched one batch of chicks off) the other CLB has pasty vent and a bad comb so not show standard or worth breeding
3 girls .............very addictive these girls are becoming

I paid £35 for mine as a POL but she is a beauty and stated laying those lovely blue eggs almost from day one and lays every day. She (Sugar) is the tamest of my 5 birds and happily sits on my knee while I hand feed the others.

Prices always seems to vary considerably depending upon where you are in the country. I paid £15 for a cream Legbar last year but am very happy with it. :)

I have never paid more than £10  fora chook before. :)

I bought two for £15 each from a reputable breeder in Cumbria. They look identical but one lays greeny blue eggs and the other's eggs are a chalky white. Go figure.
