how much weight can a broody chicken loose ?
« on: September 22, 2009, 08:39 »
we have a broody wyandotte, who is just at the end of her 2nd week.
in herself she seems fine, just broody, no mites etc, last wormed in may, she is lively enough on the lawn with the others, she just eats very little, normal but little poos, and she has lost just over a pound, her breastbone can now be clearly felt.
any ideas?
she will eat a few mealworms, then goes off scratching, compared to the other dotte, her crop at night is tiny.

Something not quite right with the poops if she's broody GD  Broody hens normally do huge ones and boy do they stink

Is she sitting anything or are you just letting her sit it out ?

hmm agree with Vember, be worth checking for broodiness - hot breast with feathers missing, noisy growling when disturbed on the nest with typical fluffing up of feathers. When she emerges from the nestbox it is usally accompanied by a cacophony of rosey, fluffing up and scratching around. Poos once they are sitting tight become larger than normal, greenish and stink to high heaven! :tongue2:

she tries to sit in the nest box, but i sin bin her, put her in the outside run.
if she does get in the box, then she is a turkey, fluffs up grumbles and has a peck if you try to pick her up.
she has just had a pick at a probiotic yogurt, but then gone off leaving it, as she does with most food, came out of the run with the others and had a bit of grass, just does not seem to want to eat.

What food is she eating? Pellets or corn?

When ever I've got an "Off Colour" girlie i try her with cat food, if she refuses that then there is something more going on :(

layers are always available, when i put her in the outside run, on her own, so the others can have access to the coop to lay, she has mixed corn.
she will eat a little of whatever i put down, mealworms, cat food, yogurt, and she will peck at the grass, she just does not eat as much as the other one.
her poos are not runny, and are what i would say were normal ( according to auntie ) and about right for what she eats, its just she does not eat a lot, vera the bantam eats more than doris does, and she has lost just over a pound.
have mixed up layers in water to make a soft porridge, with some split maize and probiotic yogurt, she has had a bit but the walked off.
