Raspberries
« on: October 18, 2013, 10:11 »
Hi All, Any advise for raspberries please, I have ordered a pack of 18 plants, 6 of each variety from Marshalls, is there any advise for orientation of the rows etc?

I am planning to plant them in three rows about 1.2m apart, with 6ft stakes at each end with restraining wire, they will be next to the rhubarb patch.

Thanks

North-south rows would provide the most even illumination, but raspberries aren't as dependent on full sunshine as many other soft fruits.

Weed-free, well drained soil with added organic matter should suit them well.

Make sure you take into account the shading they may cause when fully grown, and also the fact that they will almost certainly start suckering up into adjacent areas, although you can add a vertical physical barrier into the soil about 18" deep and 18" away from the row to control that if you can't afford the space for that to happen (guess how I know that!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I have my raspberries in a north south line, so they get the maximum amount of sunlight, and don't block out too much light
for the surrounding crops.
My rows are spaced about 5 ft apart ,as they send out loads of new canes, which will narrow your initial spacing

I planted mine (North-South) in "fruiting order", as for me adjacent varieties ripening times overlap and could thus be picked "together"
