Sowing seed against constant rain!
« on: April 21, 2012, 11:45 »
Hi, this will be my first year on my allotment so I dont really know much and i'm learning as i o along. So far i have only planted spuds, onion sets, spring onions, garlic, blueberry, raspberries and strawberries.

In my cold frame I have some lettuce, cauliflower, turnips and sweet peas that I have grown from seed that need planting out, i think! Next i want to sow parsnips, rocket and spinach directly.

In Chehire we are having constant rain and sometimes hail stones and i'm unsure If i should transplant anything else or sow seeds direct unil the rain clams down.

Can anyone please give me so advice, will the rain affect newly things planted and should I hold off sowing seeds?

The lettuce might get a bit battered but should recover - the others will be fine.

I'm delaying direct sowing parsnip etc until the ground is less sodden.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Last year I sowed seed and then stretched debris netting tight over the bed (we have rasied beds), which helped stop the soil turning to a clay slick before seeds had germinated.

Worked well, and also stopped the pigeons from eating the seedlings  :D

Me too Yorkie, and the beetroot.  They will all wash away at the moment I would think

Mine are up OK.

They are under enviromesh, which has stopped those massive hailstones from killing them, and the soil improvement has made it less claggy altogether  :D
