Hi All,
Hens are doing well, the ´Americano´hens are laying every now and again, needs about 8 eggs for scrambled eggs!! The RH Reds are laying every day, 3 hens give me 2 eggs a day, but I am still getting a soft shelled egg, despite all the added calcium!!  If I take the hen to the vets will he be able to do anything?  I have discovered which hen it is, the one with the mainly white bottom!! Will the vet think I am mad???

Hi Pamela,

Try giving her some cod liver oil to boost her vitamin D.  A few drops each day on a special treat (little bits of toast are good)

The food has added cod liver oil, for hardening shells the man said! They have had crushed egg shells, snails (crushed- wont eat them if they are big) crushed oyster shell, a white powder (not cocaine!!) and grit.......still not getting the poor hen´s inners working right :?

Hi Pamela, it doesn't seem to matter what I give my old girls, I still regularly get 3 soft shelled eggs a day, but yours are younger chooks, so I can't understand why she is still doing it especially with everything you are giving her!

I don't think a vet can do anymore than you are already doing, not many of them specialise in chooks!!!  Especially in Spain, they'd more than likely eat her and get another chook!

stop the crushed egg shells .............., give her loads greens to chomp on.. to much calcium is worse than not enough

The spinache is beginning to shoot up so they will soon get loads of green stuff. there is a weed that is like a succulent, they love that! The hen that is giving the soft eggs is one that ´sits´for me and lets me pick her up. I´d hate to lose her.  " eggs a day is plenty for us (out of 3 big hens) and we get a tiny egg about 3 times a week so really another egg a day is not needed unless we have visitors. The soft eggs have been happening for a few months now.

to much causes bone malformation and other probs .its like giving a child no calcium they get rickets which makes the bones weak and collapse ,to much they grow malformed bones etc and also it can cause ridging on eggs
