« on: May 10, 2010, 12:39 »
a kindly neighbour gave me 4 (the type used in offices for fresh drinking water) I am going to use them as mini cloches but the plastic is so tough I cant cut through it I have tried a hack saw , Stanley knife, kitchen knife, scissors I can make a hole and that is it any tips??
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I cut mine with a hacksaw, the ones I get from work cut like butter with a hacksaw. check your blade is sharp and employ someone else to hold it still for you.

They do make very good cloches.

I use an ordinary wood saw, or a tenon saw, for cutting those sorts of things (including 2L pop-bottles)

If you can make a fire, heat an old blade up in it, it will cut through it no problem.

i would have thought a hack saw would have no trouble, make sure the blade is sharp, if it is then make sure it is fitted to the saw the correct way round, failing that and electric jig saw should do the trick

A jigsaw.  Get a fine blade though as it chews it to bits otherwise.

I have a load of em as cloches.  Perfect for the job.  any moisture runs down the sides so doesn't drip on the leaves, and the large hole at the top allows plenty of air in.

I even have a couple under my plum trees upside down in the soil filled with gravel to water them with during dry spells.
