I have finished digging !!!!!!!!!!
« on: February 24, 2008, 18:43 »
Hi,
I don't normally post trivia like this but....

Today I have finished the digging of my plot  :D
I took it over last June when it was knee deep in Couch, Dock and Mares Tail. There was a thick thatch of roots in the first three inches of topsoil that was like concrete to my spade and I was told it had not been worked for about five years.

I have now dug and hand weeded every single inch of the plot twice and today I completed the digging in of the Manure that I laid on the plot last October.

Anyone that is starting off, please take heed from my story. Whatever the state of you plot mine was as bad, but now after 8 months of slow steady progress, my plot looks great  8) .

I only wish I had taken my Camera with me to post a photo for you all to see, but when  I go down next Saturday I will take a photo and put it on here.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Leeks, which I had some success with.
French and Runner beans which were okay ish.
Spuds which got blight and were hopeless.
Swedes and Spouts which got decimated by Pigeons (got netting for this year)
Tomatoes which were grown outdoors and were dire and got blight.

I learnt a lot last year, and I saw it as preparation for this season and a steep learning curve.

What will I do different this year.
Only grow First Earlie's to avoid blight.
Net all my Brassicas.
I have now got a Greenhouse for the Toms.
And as for the beans just do the same as last year but sow them earlier ( I didn't sow until mid June and the summer was dire too boot).

Keep going,
I remember you posting earlier this year saying you had long last got a plot.
Took me back to last June, it was daunting at first and on one occasion I considering giving up.
So glad that I didn't.

Well done!.  Started clearing my plot last year of rubbish first, then weeds.  Now only one third done, but its growing cabbages and onion, and has a strawberry patch on top ( the plot has been built up some what).  Makes you feel good to see stuff growing. Its great to know others are going through the same as you.  Keep it up and good luck for this year.

I think we all got blight last year :(   Last year was orrible and hopefully this year is bound to be better

Last year was rubbish for spuds and tomatoes cos of blight. and for newbies it must have been hard not to throw the towel in.

My onions, and even shallots, rotted in the ground and those I put in store were terrible so I composted two thirds.  It's demoralising but you just thing stuff it and start again :D

Well done Fatbelly, for sticking in there. Its so easy to walk away when its tough going (when the going gets tough, the tough get going) but you chose not to and now have a great plot with great gardening times ahead. Hope you do post some pics. A before and after would be great.  :D
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
