Long White Cucumber
« on: July 06, 2010, 11:48 »
Hi, I have 3 cucumber plants which are Long White variety. They are growing well and are starting to flower.Does anyone know if I need to pollinate them or are they self pollinating? I was given them and have no instructions and can't seem to find anything on here or the net.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Quote
From Amazon:LONG WHITE CUCUMBER Annual. Herbaceous, creeping, branched and hairy stem. Cylindrical fruit with white peel. Few seeds. Sowing: April to June in open field into prepared holes (4-5 seeds per hole) Quantity: 3-4 g of seed per 10 sq meters of surface. Distance: about 1 mt between seed holes

As it's an outside/ridge cucumber just leave all the flowers on and let the bees do the job :)

I'm growing them too (outside) and they surprised me by suddenly producing 3 fat 4" cukes in a few days with no help at all.
I ate those (still loads of flowers and babies) and was a little disappointed with the texture (bit soft) and taste was not sweet as I expected.
Is this because I picked too early? Over-watered?

They are supposed to get long, hence the name ::) and to have a mild taste.....perhaps not the right variety for you then

I like Burpless Tasty Green, but as long as you pick them young any of the ridge cues are nice I think. I've been eating gherkins straight off the plant today...about 3 in long but they were very nice :)
I'm trying a Crystal Lemon... round cues, this year.........have to see what they are like!
I will report back  :D
