poorly chicken
« on: June 19, 2010, 09:03 »
My black rock had a slight run in her nose and sneezed twice in 2 days, I was constantly watching her but possibly sneezed more when I wasnt around.  I called the vets for advice to be told I was being overly cautious.  I have also been trying to get a hold of the supplier with no success as he isnt answering his phone or returning my calls.

Now one of my rhode reds has a wet nose.  I am just waiting for the vets to open so I can call them.  I have four birds, which I got 3 weeks ago.

They are all eating well, although I would say the black rock has lost some weight.

There is no specialist at the vets I go to but surely they would be able to check the girls over for me and possibly refer me to someone in the know?

This morning I have been reading up on chickens with runny noses etc but my chickens symptons arent as far on as what Ive read so hopefully if the vet will see them this morning I can get it nipped in the bud before whatever it is gets worse.

Off to call the vet x

Taking them all to the vets at 10.30.  Fingers crossed whatever it is can be dealt with today and its not something that she doesnt have a clue about.  Will update later.

Yes took them all along to the vets.  My black rock Natalie has an upper respitory problem so they are now all on antibiotics,(Baytril).  Vet reckons the other 3 are fine at the moment.

No other signs of anything apart from a wet nose on Natalie and she started sneezing more when she was in the vet.  She has also lost some of her weight although I am unsure if this is related.  Could it be ??  (I have been giving her extra food the past few days, some porridge and cat food which she is devouring in the hope it helps build her up a bit). Poppy the rhode island red first showed signs of a wet nose this morning but nothing since.

Hopefully the antibiotics work their magic.

Is there anything else I could be doing to help?  Apart from the baytril the vet didnt advise anything else.

Thanks for the well wishes x

I hope natalie gets well soon and all your others seem to stay well.

The only things  I can recommend that helps with general health is putting a bit of Apple cider vinegar and garlic in there water. ( you can get these from an equine shop or countrywide etc.)

Hope she gets well soon well done you for taking her to the vet.

At the moment I dont see much improvement in Natalie but she hasnt got any worse so thats a good sign.  Poppy was slightly worse this morning than she was yesterday.  Will be chatting with the vet again in the morning to review the dosage.

Managed to get hold of they guy I got the birds from.  Apparently they were wormed and fully vaccinated.

One day last week my girls wouldnt take cover from the rain and got drenched.  I couldnt get them to go in their coop either so I patted them dry when the rain went off.  The same thing happened the nex day.  I wonder if them getting soaked is a contributing factor to why they are poorly, although 2 of them are fine at the moment.
