chicken poo
« on: May 03, 2013, 10:41 »
Okay I know the topic isnt a good thing to start off with

My missus broke her arm and she was moaning about the amount of chicken poo she had to clean up each morning and how awkward it was with one arm

I went out and bought 3 of these growbag trays, they seemed pretty cheap enough (£3.99)

They fitted right under their perches, and getting them out is easy each morning (she can do it one handed) (1 meter long x nearly 400mm wide)

They can then be hosed off and left in the sun to dry out all ready for the next night/evening

Just thought I'd pass this on, it certainly has made cleaning them out each morning easier and I still give the coop a good rinse out each week, (and I dont have a crust of poo to scrape up) :)

Maybe other might find these handy :) :) :) :)
It's all about the journey, not the destination

Good idea, thanks.  ;)

Would newspaper under the perches work too, or do they just shred it??   :tongue2:

I tried newspaper, they just thought it was something else to drag about, but you could tape it to the trays, then just take out the paper

I havent tried that, but I'll give it a try

Thanks

I think joyful uses similar trays under her perches, or was it another member?

I wish I had tried or thought of it ages ago, saves a lot of mess, makes cleaning them out a lot quicker and easier

It was something I didnt look forward to

Is there any other handy tips anyone has ?

I think there was a thread started where people put there tips on last year.  Can't remember what it was called, hopefully another member will.

Any tips to make life and cleaning them out and keeping them (the hens and wives) are always appreciated

I used to leave a light on in the coop in the winter so they could feed longer (as I werent sure they ate enough)  sems I was wrong there, but they did carry on laying through the winter :)

I use a light in the winter for my quail so I get eggs over Christmas but turn it off after that to give their bodies a rest.
