Impacted Crop
« on: July 29, 2013, 21:54 »
Hello, For the first time in years I have two hens with an impacted crop. I have been massaging the crop and giving them olive oil daily. The one hens feels much like a water balloon, The others is more hard and tight feeling. Does anyone have any tips or information regarding this? Thanks!

I'd go easy on the oil as it will give them diarrhoea and they're already suffering from lack of food. The only way we've found to be quickly effective was to give them live white maggots from a fishing tackle shop.

And make sure you ask specifically for white maggots...first time I asked for 1/2 pint of maggots I got a bag of the mixed coloured ones, which cleared the crop wonderfully, but then i ended up with red egg yolks, which didnt look that appetising.

Just checking- the one that feels like a water balloon, are you sure it's an impacted crop and not sour?
Is it firm or squishy and does her breath smell?

I was told to hold her on her back and massage it and she would throw up. She did throw up a little today so yes her breath was a little stinky, but before she threw up she smelled fine.
