strawberry runners
« on: September 04, 2007, 18:24 »
Today I finally got around to tidying the strawberry patch.  There were runners all over the place, runners with two or three babies and those babies had runners with more babies who also had runners...!  Some of the babies had flowers and one or two had fruit as well.  One plant had 11 runners.  The patch looks a lot tidier now that I have cut back to three runners with one baby each max to each plant. Should have enough to start a new patch very soon once they ahve taken root.

One question though, why do some plants produce loads of runners and other not produce any at all?  My mae plants have been prolific runner producers but the malling opal have produced maybe 7 runners between the 10 original plants.

aren't strawberries one of those plants that is forced to sprout if food is scarce? they're greedy things. Maybe one sort was in less nutritious soil than the other

Maybe one plant was just more greedy than the other    they were both in the same bed and well nourished.
