Bean tips and beet leaves
« on: June 16, 2010, 18:46 »
Well you learn something new every day.  I never would have thought to use broad bean tips before reading something about it on here.  It made me think about what else we might be throwing in the compost which we could eat! Came back from the lotty this evening with lots of yummy broad bean tips, beetroot and beetroot thinnings.

I have never eaten beetroot stalks before (these were young beets) - they were yummy and the broad bean tips were gorgeous flash fried with some courgettes.

Thank you!
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

Oh blast.  That's about the one thing I haven't sown this year.  I found last year it was only me in the family who really liked them, so I haven't bothered  :(
Maybe I'll do myself just a few... there must be a little bit of lotty I haven't covered yet?

This time in the year they grow really fast ---  you might need to cover them with netting to avoid the leaves getting holes in them from flea beetles though  ;)

I didn't get my plot until last August ... and turnips were one of the first things I sowed.

They did really well, was still harvesting turnips and beetroot right until December (I fleeced them over when it started getting really cold).  I guess it helps that we have good drainage.

I was the only one who liked the turnips but I found my 7 yr old absolutely loves beetroot and couldn't get enough.  I'm sowing lots and lots this year  :)

I never used the leaves last year - good point about the netting if one's using the leaves.

I also like turnip tops but my family thought they were disgusting!  They also dislike curly kale - of which I seem to have an excess!  Anyone know any different ways to cook kale to maybe disguise the strong taste?

You could try shredding up your kale and stir frying it with garlic, ginger, chilli and soy, plus any other stir fry veg of your choice.  I quite often use winter greens like this.

That's handy - I've sown some curly kale (reminds me, I must transplant it this weekend!).
Sounds yummy.
