Full disclaimer this is not on my allotment. It’s in my late father snack garden and the tree is at least 40 years old. Nothing has been done to this tree for years, and it has suffered a lot from shade as it is in the shadow of two outrageous leylandii ( I have signed their execution orders, the tree surgeon is coming next week). What is the growth? Is the tree salvageable or should I get rid? Many thanks.

Good afternoon missmoneypenny,  wooly aphids are what you have there.  I have a touch of it on my apple trees, it's an aphid not a fungus as I had been treating it.

You can treat with Neem oil

I brush woolly aphids off with a stiff brush. Wear a mask, though, or you find yourself breathing in woolly aphids!

Thanks for this. This infestation looks really nasty. One of the few good things about lockdown, I have masks! Will try brushing them off.
