Palm or yucca
« on: March 19, 2012, 21:15 »
Hello

I am looking for an outdoor stylish plant to go in a pot.  We have a 'kentia the areca' at work, and its beautiful, but obviously warm and stuffy indoors, like me unfortunately!  But that kind of style I am looking for.

I saw some beautiful ones at the garden centre yesterday but forgot to get the name, I have to be careful too, as I have little ones so not too sharp at the edges, which I know yuccas can be.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks Amanda :D

Cordyline?  Don't know if they have sharp leaves though.

Totally different is a fatsia japonica - glossy dark green leaves with interesting shapes.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Absolutely,& there's some lovely varieties. 1 I particularly like & have got is the black one.
My son & partner bought a variegated fatsia at the weekend that was nice for a change although I love my plain one. It's got loads of seed heads on,I bet you could grow them.

Cordylines dont' have the sharp edges to the leaves like yuccas do.  Plant in really gritty compost & keep in a fairly sheltered space though, as they hate winter wet.

We have several bamboos in pots:some are eight feet tall or more, and look spectacular  :D

You need to be very very careful in selecting the right bamboo variety to grow in open ground.  Many are invasive with a capital 'I'

Senior moment :(...I meant phormium not cordyline; some cordylines can have sharp leaves though not as bad as yuccas.

Get a  Cordyline. looks great, and the  old dry leave leaves can be made into boigradeable string, cord, even rope.
