Hello
I was wondering what a chicken's preen gland normally looks like?
Weird question I guess, but we've inherited a chicken and the preen gland looks kind of strange to me, but I've never before looked that closely at a chicken!!

Thanks for any pointers, or even a pic.
I couldn't believe I couldn't find a pic on the web!

It's like an elongated wart type thingy about a half inch long.

if you look at the tail joint where the tail joins the body draw an imaginary line across this joint and then disect it down the middle to the tail fetahers and feel for a nipple this is the preen gland if you massage it it should produce oil .. water waxes etc for protecting the feathers . if a duck sinks it has problems with its preen gland ...... and breathing underwater
