Preen gland
« on: June 02, 2010, 21:53 »
i've just rescued a chicken that was brought into work by someone who found her on a road, she had a large wound on her back and you could see all her insides, she was stitched up by the vet but unfortunatly has no preen gland, she is laying ok and feathers are growing back  :) does anyone know if she can manage without her preen gland?

Better to be alive without a preen gland than dead in the road.   :(

I dont know how it will affect her but if she has dust baths and seems to be looking after herself dont worry too much.  She a lucky chicken :)

The preen gland supplies the waterproofing for the feathers, without it the rain will soak in not run off and she may become chilled in the colder weather.
Probably safer to keep her inside on cold wet days.
