Do I need to worm girls again?
« on: September 29, 2010, 13:54 »
Hi
I thought I had my girls worming all sorted out but now I'm not so sure  ???
I originally found one worm in a poo, so orderd flubenvet. I mixed it into their food and fed it to them for 8 or 9 days (because i had it mixed and just used up all the pellets) about 3 days into treatment I did find one more worm. However I have just read that the shouldn't have been getting their treats too!  I was still giving mine their corn in the afternoon.
Should I worm them again?

No I wouldn't worry about it as they will have eaten a lot of pellets in the morning.  Just don't do it next time ;)

I can't beleive it  >:( :( >:(
I was watching my girls out in the garden and one just did a poo and it was just living worms!!!
I wormed them about 5 weeks ago with the flubenvet.
I will start with the flubenvet again in the morning and this time no treats  :)

On to it already!!
I have already mixed up 2 kg of food.
I can't beleive that i asked this question and then a few hours later -worms!! >:(
Did I also read 'no free rangeing'?
My girls sleep in a coop, in a stable and free range all day! :(

Trouble is if they free-range then they're eating quite alot of non-medicated food again with the grass, worms, insects etc..
As you know they've got quite a severe infestation I'd recommend ensuring they only eat the medicated pellets this time to be certain of getting rid of them. The chx will moan like mad but it's being cruel to be kind.
Once they've finished their 7 day course you could try a bit of garlic in a favourite treat every few days and ACV 1 week out of 4 in water. Both are said to help minimise the worm burden in poultry.

Sorry to go back to this thread but I wasnt aware either about the no treats rule. I thought I read on here somewhere that if the hens dont like taking it then put it on treats such as grapes etc so at leart you KNOW it been eaten. Ive given mine the powder mixed in muesli coz I know it will all be taken.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

Hi Ruby Red
I think what it is is if you mix the flubenvet in with their pellets then they should only eat this with no treats but if you dose your girls individually then its ok to keep their food as normal.  At least thats what i am making of it.  ::) I must admit I am mixing it with their pellets but still adding a little bit more when I make it up into a mash.  ;)

Note to self:  check chook poos.  I knew goats/sheep get worms but not chooks.  Thanks for this info.

I should mention that worms are not necessarily passed out with the dropping.
