strawberry runners from runners, any good to use?
« on: November 17, 2014, 10:31 »
I have just cleared a patch of strawberries that were planted last year and have some runners that I wanted to use to use to increase my stock, but seem to recall something about only using the first runner off the mother plant, as they won't produce a good quantity of fruit, it's just they look really healthy rooted runners seems a shame to get rid of them.

I didn't want to waste the space if they were not going to be very productive, and waste a year finding out to.

Anybody got any advice?

Thanks.

I think only taking off the first runner is so you don't deplete the plant too much for the next season. If they look healthy, then I'd plant them.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

i think they are genetically the same as the host plant because they reproduce by division so as good or bad as the mummydaddy plant

I have planted up to 3 plants from a single runner - but then I feed the mother plant well.

I started with 3 plants and now have over 500 and increasing still. Keep at it!

Taking off runners does not deplete the mother plant in any way. In fact it makes it stronger. I cut off all runners in the first year, then in the second year i pot up all the runners i can find. In the third year i throw all the mother plants into the compost bin and plant out the second year runners.
