Baffling beetroots
« on: June 08, 2014, 20:44 »
Evening all
Sowed a total of 5 lots of beetroot so far this year and got nothing. Not even a shoot. Where have I gone wrong? Tried 3 different sorts, all in date and even bought a new packet and sowed them but to no avail.
No beetroot cake this year 😒
Meanwhile, the parsnips that should have been sown by January 2013 that I sowed in March this year are romping away..

Same problem here. It has been too cold. We sowed some in the greenhouse a few days ago and they have come up so it's not the seed. They do need the warm.

8 batches before we got anything, GH ones not far off picking, outdoor ones still very small.

Never had trouble with beets and they were all new seeds.

my first time trying beetroot, thought it was me! Got a few that were started of indoors that have survived, probably about 25% of what I put in. Have also sown some seed direct and got nothing. Sown some more indoor sto try and fill in the gaps!!
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)

I know this will attract some criticism as being time consuming -  but it works for me - I get small module trays - 5 X 8 - fill with any old compost and then plant a beetroot seed in each - they germinate outside really easily - then as soon as they have 1 true leaf I plant them out - they always take well and I get great beetroot. I do this as my clay soil quickly forms a clay cap which inhibits the beetroot seedlings. I succession sow and get good results.

I wonder if they are germinating fine but the millions of slugs this year are eating them as soon as they emerge?

I started mine off in two 15 module seed trays and planted them out early under cloches and I now have two more seed trays ready to go in and I have two more seed trays where they have just started to grown took 5 days to germinate and to start sowing - I did have a propagator lid on them inside the greenhouse and it has been really warm

The idea is to start off a couple of trays every two weeks this month and next.

I usually sow into paper/peat pots and plant out once established. This year I sowed direct (lots more space with having an allotment) and out of the 150 or so seeds sown (5 varieties) I've got 6 seedlings which are clinging on to life. Paper pots to be constructed Thursday on my day off.

I thought about the slug issue, so on the last row sown I put some pellets down too. Will check on their progress tomorrow. Will try module sowing tomorrow if nothing occurring with the direct sown ones

. . . and out of the 150 or so seeds sown (5 varieties) I've got 6 seedlings which are clinging on to life. Paper pots to be constructed Thursday on my day off.

Perhaps it's too much water ?  I sowed a 4m row and then had to fill some gaps at the end of the row . . . the ones at the end of the row have struggled,  I think, due to having too much rain.

Original row . . .

Gap fillers

I'm hoping that with a little dry weather this week they will pick up.

Here is my Bed 1 with the original and those I planted today, picture taken before watering them in so they are a little sad looking at the moment but I'm sure they will buck up in a day or two.

Same here - only the odd beetroot coming through in a whole row. Last year I had so many I couldn't cope with them all.

Other failures this year - about six carrots germinated in a thirty foot row. Re-sowed - still no carrots.

Parsnips - not much better than the carrots.

Rocket - either the flea beetles got it before I saw it, or it didn't come up at all, despite sowing three lots.
