I have a few spaces left on the lotty isit too late for sweet corn will they ripen before the frosts?
-
I only sowed mine last Thursday. They're germinating now will go out as soon as they're big enough & to be honest with the weather as it has been I think they'll have as much chance as everyone else's.
-
thanks i'll get them sown tomorrow, better than empty space

I sowed some sweetcorn directly a couple of weeks ago and they are coming up. I also planted some plants I had raised in the greenhouse. They were quite big strong and green when I planted them. They are now pretty yellow. Does anyone know why this might be? Is it a problem? and how can I correct it ? Thanks

Mine are exactly the same Hen Maiden - we don't know your location but if you've had the same persistent low temperatures as most of us you don't need to look any further for the reason.
A liquid feed might help them recover if/when the weather improves.

Mine are fab when I planted them out and now too are yellow!
What sort of feed should I give them?
Becs x

It partly depends on your soil - mine is sandy and will be very depleted after all this rain, so I shall give a liquid feed for a quick boost (Miracle Grow in my case, but Phostrogen or comfrey liquid would also be fine) followed by a dressing with a general purpose fertiliser, as they are very fast-growing and hungry plants in the right conditions.
What they need more than anything of course is warmth and sun (same with the runner beans.) :(

Becs... I have the same yellowish sweetcorn.. I thnk everyone I've spoken to has as well.. just the weather. I've added bunny poo as it is high in Ammonium and John Harrison this site owner twitters that they need Ammonium so I'm trying it!!

You should avoid using fresh rabbit poo as it is very strong and can burn the plants.

I always thought that rabbit manure is a 'cold' manure and can be applied fresh

Well you learn summat every day :D
Maybe I've confused it with chicken poo?

;) this, rabbit poo is basically just crushed hay and grass.
My sweetcorn isn't out yet, I put them out too early last year and they snapped in the wind. It's so blustery here that I haven't dared put it out yet. It's still in the hardening off greenhouses which are basically like cold frames.

Fresh chicken poo is Hot....

i have two blocks of sweetcorn, the mini pop is looking green, healthy and happy, but the main crop is yellow and sickly looking.
The mini ones are surrounded by a glass windbreak to provide shelter, whereas the mains are fighting for themselves.... as previously mentioned it must be down to the cold days and nights.
If u feed them am sure they will green up.... have just dosed mine in comfrey liquid... just hope it doesnt affect the beetroot growing between the plants!!!
-
they have germinated very fast keep my fingers crossed

My sweetcorn (planted in very light sandy soil) was looking a tad yellow with all of the rain washing the nutrients out of the soil, coupled with the lack of sun so I put some fresh bunny poo on and they're looking much better; not damaged by the ammonia at all.
I also feed with an organic seaweed feed as the soil (which can't really be called soil at all to be honest) is so light and sandy that it drains instantly, leaving the crops with little to hold onto the moisture.
