Sprouting broccoli support
« on: August 18, 2012, 13:40 »
What would you recommend for supporting my Purple Sprouting Broccoli. I have 14 plants to support and the only thing I have to hand is bamboo canes which I presume will not be man enough for the job.

Talking from experience - go down the scrappies and see if they have any 8 foot lengths of garvanised water pipe.  It sounds extreme but when those winter winds start
a blowing.  .  .  .

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Certainly something stronger than bamboo. Good support is well worthwhile as by the Spring the plants weigh a lot and will otherwise blow down. At worst this may dislodge the roots and the plant will give up before it has finished producing.

Thanks for suggestions.

One final thing, how tall should the support be out of the ground?

I know that sprouting broccoli can get to 5ft

It only needs to be about 2 ft and well tied to the stem. A bit taller is no problem.
