Cleaned out a few salad plants in th PT that had a bit of fuzzy mould on as I hadn't ventilated much over Christmas. The mild few weeks we've had of late mean that the weeds are starting to pop up.

Collect the first eggs of 2019.
Chatted with the lasses a bit and then looked at the plot thinking I need to make a start!

Spread a pile of wood ash over the plot, and raked it in.
That's it for now!

Well on the 1st I took the compost able waste down to the plot & started to move the compost along a bay filling each bin up as I went, admired the rather large holes & tunnels that had appeared & hoped no furry noses popped out to say hello!! I didn’t get it all done so on the
2nd I went back again & finished digging out bin no 2 into bin no.3 also adding some of the Berkeley pile to bins 1 & 2. I was surprised at how well that had rotted down only some rather big woody bits left visible.
Cooked my lunch on my gas stove & realised that the bar stewards that broke in had taken my tin of extra teas & coffees ( they were probably very out of date so I hope they get tummy aches! Or worse lol).

Today I covered my pea plants with a fleece.  Frost promised tonight.

However, having received John's newsletter today with a picture of leeks; a couple of days ago I tidied mine up (again). Does anyone else do this or am i stunting them.  I have trimed them 3-4 times a year for the last few years. Never get realy fat leeks but they do ok.

I also start them off in a 10" pot and leave them until ready to plant out - when I trim roots and tops and dib them into well watered holes.

Mine was my first trip to the allotment since before Christmas.
Nothing's changed
Apart from.some new weed heads in the strawberry bed!

So I carried on digging my marked out bit, and marked out the area where I'll put my Munty Frame™

Yesterday I cut the grass, pruned the vines and fruit bushes, tidied around berries and raked a bed.

Today I sowed Solent Wight and Red Duke garlic. I also pruned the fruit trees and put in some stakes around the beds.

First visit for me also since well before Christmas  ;)
Things not looking too bad. Took builders sack of bark chippings and spread over my new patio area  :D
In front of my lovely plum tree is area that I can't really grow anything on and difficult to weed too due to tree roots.
Mostly levelled it off! Spread weed fabric over it, dotted freecycle paving slabs around and started filling gaps between slabs with chippings. Need another couple of bags to finish.
Have plastic bench already and will take deck chair down in spring to sit and admire plot.
Really pleased as looks really good  :)
Topped up some of the paths with chippings also.
Few brassicas to dig up and odd patches to weed but all in all, plot looks good.

I didn't due to a cracked fibula on one leg but "the junior team" dug out the brussels which were past their best, lifted themselves some parsnips, took some apples and then with the help of one of their friends and his gardening gear lowered and shredded the rest of the hedges on plot number 2.

It's now possible to manage most of the hedges round 2 allotments with a lot more ease!

I got some well rotted manure from the local stable and put it over a bed. I was a little short though so another trip planned soon.

I also put some compost on the bed but I'm a little concerned as it may not be quite decomposed enough

Had a walk down yesterday, carried on digging soil in a raised bed, removing weeds & roots from it and breaking it up nice and fine. Will carry on doing that this afternoon i think. Pulled some leeks this morning.

Dug over and add some well rotten manure ready to plant my garlic soon - was like a spring morning here & soil was lovely to turn - getting itching fingers 😂

Then moved down the plot to an area that’s not been dug in years, we removed 3 huge lavender plants in the autumn they were very woody and had seen better days but the couch roots in that area are awful so when we removed the lavenders we roughly dug it over and cleared - so repeated with another rough dig & clear today - always amazes me how many thick couch grass roots come up - think 1-2 more turn overs and I may start to win.

Got rid of the weeds, found some forgotten about ocra (enough for 1 meal) gave away lots of oxeyed Daisy’s ready for manuring tomorrow!!
Cut back all the lavender
Dealt with some of the invasion of strawberry runners in the second bed.
Hoping to pick up some poop tomorrow and get these 2 beds covered.  :D

Sorted the garlic in storage that was harvested in July, planned out a shed extension and priced up materials, pulled a few leeks then rain stopped play.
Title: Re: What I did on the plot today 2019
Post by: New shoot on January 26, 2019, 17:37
Rain stopped play here as well, but I did got a few things done at home.

I picked up a tray of violas of 20 decent sized plugs of a pretty pastel mix for £6 a week or so ago.  They have been dotted through pots of spring bulbs and provided a nice module tray for me to re-use  :)

On the same garden centre trip, I found a couple of packs of overwintering onions for 50p each.  They were in good condition, so must have been in the stores out the back, rather than on the shop floor.  There were 35 sets in each pack, plus a couple extra.  I only chucked a couple away as they were squishy, so 70 planted in a raised bed.  I'll grow them for giant spring onions and for £1, even if they don't all work, I reckon I can't go far wrong  :D

Also checked the shed and found the garlic just starting to sprout.  Cue bringing them in for roasting and freezing in ice-cube trays.  The greenhouse also got a sort out and water.

We managed to get hold of another water butt so did some repositioning, my lovely OH took two bags of rubbish to the tip that had previously been cleared out of the shed.

Also tidied up my strawberry bed- not sure it was a good thing to do yet but they were a tangle of runners and couch & I know before long there will be loads to do and I'll be pushed for time so it's a case of needs must.  It was freezing & trying to rain but we loved it over there.

Again in the greenhouse gave the chicken palace another coat of paint & then I potted up the primula’s I bought in Lidl on Thursday along with1/2 dozen wallflowers I’d forgotten about,, a hellebore I’d bought maybe as a gift for Christmas but didn’t give & the small conifer & red berry plant that I’d put in my Rudolph wicker planter for Christmas.
Oh & 10 tulip bulbs that were lurking in the  shed.
Ended up with 4 pots of plants, 3 placed near the front door & 1 outside the kitchen patio doors. Came in for a hot cuppa & a good warm as boy was it chilly

Getting very restless but just too wet here to do much.  So stayed on my paths turned over my edges and cleared the couch (have to say very pleased with the results now after doing it about 5 times  :D).

Planted 3 lavenders and planted the red & blackcurrent cuttings - they'd been in a pot and had started rooting and some healthy shoots forming so fingers crossed.

This week made a new small raised bed, to be used for turnips mostly.
Emptied out the greenhouse, cleaned it in and out with a little soap and water. It is now gleaming.
Cleaned all the greenhouse shelving and redug and mixed in some new and homemade compost to the raised beds in there ready for the tomatoes and cucumbers later this year.
Have sown some broad bean after soaking them indoors for a few days.

Two fabulous days spent in my happy place.  Planted out my garlic; turned over the area where lavenders had been planted - couch was so thick and never ending but I'm winning.  Father in law kindly donated some concrete slabs so repoistioned the water butt and laid slabs for a standing platform in front of water butt & redcurrent bush.  Started to prune plum tree before someone lost an eye!  Dont think I've ever been this organised and tidy at this time of the year.  My year off definitely worked wonders.

Dug in a couple bags on hen house waste, lifted the last of the potatoes and leeks.  While we were there, the children were offered a raised bed each at the entrance to our site.  We've only got a half plot so we were flattered to be considered and the children (aged 5 and 9) are planning the combination of flowers and veg they want to grow.

Hello
I’m new  ;)

Two plots had one for 6 years and second one from Sep last year it’s been a massive task but slow and steady. Today’s job was removing an old netted cage from round the new plots green house.
Building some Aldi potting benches and cutting wood for some new raised beds.

All done in crazy wind while the kids bouncy around on the trampoline.

I'm back after a long silence!  I've just retired - this week - and am hoping to get to the plot a lot more than before.

Planted shallots yesterday, and garlic today.  I read that this is the latest you can plant garlic, so I bought some corms online and they're all in now.

In clearing a patch at the end of Bed 5 for the garlic I filled a sack with the weeds and roots, which come with a lot of soil.  The sack's v heavy - mostly my topsoil clinging to the roots.  Up to now I've been tipping this into the green bin for the council to remove.  But thinking about that topsoil made me wonder about composting it instead.  Trouble is, I had no luck with composting.  I tried making a crude bin from old pallets - it all just fell apart after a year or two, and was really a rubbish heap not a compost bin.
Should I try one of those dalek things?  I do have quite a lot of couch grass and I seem to remember that you shouldn't compost that.  Is there anything else you can't compost?

Any advice on how to deal with weeds without just chucking them all in the council's green bin?

Today I dug out the bed for my asparagus crowns      It sounded an easy job but once I realised it was going to be awkward with all the grass roots I took the Plan B route......put down a huge sheet of tarpaulin and chucked the soil + zillions of roots onto that!   Dug down around 12 inches then put down some well rotted horse manure & compost and, as it was getting towards dusk, I covered it all up with a piece of weed membrane and will finish it off tomorrow or Monday morning.

Amazing how much soil comes out of such a relatively small hole!!!   ???   I'm really looking forward to sieving through that lot.....

You can drown them in a bucket of water for 3/4 weeks or more if they still have life in them, dry them & then compost or burn them, stack them in black bags for 6 months or more but I’d get as much soil off them as you can first for option 1 or 2. Look on YouTube for building a compost bin from pallets, if you got that sorted & then learnt to get it all working you could incorporate your weeds in there along with some fresh manure.
Or you could buy a hot composting bin, John the site owner here has one & did a write up on using one. The key to composting weeds is getting it hot. The only weed I don’t compost is horse/mares tail, I let it dry by leaving it on the path & then burn it or bin it.

I took a tomato plant in pot and left in polytunnel overnight to see if it will survive overnight. I don't have much window sill space left, so need to move some on. I'm not sure how cold it gets in the pt overnight, so must buy a Max/min thermometer or leave my raspberry pi there overnight to monitor temperature.

Put in potatoes and directly sowed beetroot and carrots.

Weeding - they're back.

I’ve been given some bags of old hemp insulation so I’m mulching and mulching!!

Every windowsill in the house is covered in seedlings!! The peas are outside waiting for me to dig them a spot. I have far too many seedlings for available space and am digging up the lawn to make room!!

I’m also trying to plant a new hedge 25m long, no small task.

So pleased the clocks have changed and I’ll be able to do a decent stint in the garden after work!!

Weeding, weeding, weeds!  and what to do with them

A man on the top plot told me last week that I can just put my weeds into a plastic sack (I have zillions of old dog food sacks),  close them up so light and rain don't get in, and leave the sacks in a corner of the garden for a year or so.  He said the weds would have composted themselves after a year.

I've so far got 4 sacks down at the far end, behind the jungle in the corner behind the garage.  A lot more to fo0llow.

Is this the way to go?

So far, since retiring ten days ago, I've managed an hour or a half hour on the plot every day!  The fine weather helps.  I'm very optimistic for the year ahead!

Definitely the way to go! In my first year I put all the tough perinnials into black bags and let them toast in the sun. Once they were deader than dead they were chucked in the compost heap.

Hello, I haven't posted for ages as I was away in Spain for the winter. Anyway, I've been busy sorting out my raised beds that I'd left manured and covered for the winter. I dug out the bottom of my compost bin and raked that into the beds. I've discovered that avocado skins don't break down properly, so won't be putting any more in the compost!
Onion sets, garlic, potatoes and broad beans are in. I've sowed a few fennel and cabbage seeds into pots indoors. Debating whether to start some lettuces.

Dug another bed of a a new patch I have.  Will be sowing parsnips and carrots in there tonight.  Lots of brassicas coming up in pots at the moment.  I'll need to be finding space for them soon.

Fine weather today, so a good dig and deweed, emptied a compost bin and riddled the lot onto the top of a bed for potatoes, then Mrs T planted the first earlies and sowed some radishes, beetroot and spring onions while i weeded, dug over and tilled up my root veg bed ready for parsnip and early carrot sowing tomorrow (weather permitting).

Spent most of today clearing and then digging then forking through the old strawberry bed as I plan to prep this bed for next year and plant Blueberry bushes.
Also made a planter for some bee friendly plants out of a pallet, the plan is to make more of these and fill with bulbs for different times of the year.

Took my 3 yr old granddaughter & her red wheelbarrow to the plot. Firstly we had a cup of tea & hot chocolate 😉 & biscuits. First I put the new fold up chairs & table near the shed door but I was informed it was too windy, so then I moved it round the corner but that was unacceptable, so then we sat inside the shed! After that & the washing up was done by gd, we snipped all the spent flowers off all the daffodils. She did really well & was very thorough, even remembering to hold the scissors she was using safely when moving around the plot 😊. Then we fed the chickens, counted 3 eggs into the egg box, locked up & went to Grannies for dinner!

Needed to get on top of seed sowing and needed to resow my tomato plants as minimal germination so no plot visit.
So sowed 5 different types of tomatoes, cucumbers, calabrese, savoy cabbage, sugar snap peas, ambassador peas, beetroot, marigolds, sunflowers and purple flower that can't remember name  ;)
Hopefully my tomatoes will catch up and everything else will germinate.
New sewings are in jacks magic rather than very woody compost used before.
Will now just use that to top up tomato pots. ;)

Filled up tubs and planters in GH with compost ready for toms and cukes, untangled micro-irrigation system and laid out ready for holiday next month - (2nd year, hope it still works reliably. )

Runner and French beans, courgettes, squashes, sweetcorn and outdoor cukes moved from kitchen to cold frame to start hardening off (hurrah!)

First gentle earthing up of spuds, moooooore weeding (if dandelions were a more useful food I'd probably just sit back and let the garden do its own thing!)

So far today,in between rain showers, hubby & I have renetted the top of the fruit cage, funny it only just fitted to start with! I’d taken it home to wash before sewing the 2 pieces together. When we first did it 3 years ago I just did it with some nylon string but it had come adrift but now I’ve made a proper job of it I hope as long as my thread doesn’t rot in the sunlight. Also repegged down the side edges of the netting, just a large hole to repair now(don’t know what happened to that!)

Hi, I returned home on Sunday night after a month away and went to look at my raised beds yesterday with a certain amount of trepidation.
A few of my onions and a couple of purple sprouting broccoli plants had bolted; my broad beans were aphid infested and the fennel looks a bit scrawny. Other than that, the peas, kale, red cabbage, potatoes and french beans are looking pretty good despite my neglect.
I found an ants nest in my compost and had a minor panic. However, as far as I can see, they've done a good job of breaking down what's in there. I added a bucket of water to the heap today as I don't suppose I should let them live in there indefinitely!
It's nice to be back.

Last week was a weeding catch up, also lifted all the red onions which were on the small side generally, as were shallots. Garlic did very well on the other hand.

Most of leeks now moved to final resting place, the rest will go when some more potatoes come out. May sow some more carrots if I can find the seed packet.....

Strawberry runners to deal with next, moved the bed this year using runners and they seem to have taken well on the whole, but as expected a pretty modest crop of berries.

Hi all, been a while since i posted due to lots of other things going on. Managed to catch an hour daylight after work and pulled up all the dwarf French bean plants for a bean harvest, pulled all the peas down with zero harvest as they had mildewed while i was on holiday. Put plenty into the compost bins then picked some tomatoes from the potting shed and watered the stuff inside it. I've got some carrots in tall pots as a trial and a load if chilli peppers to hopefully harvest this week. It's been very wet and the non cultivated areas between my beds are still clay so quite muddy! New gardening boots, a military style, are shaping up well though  :)

Did some tidying up.  We have a small patch - just a quarter allotment really, that's all we can manage.  It comes to seven beds, but we still have quite a lot of stuff growing.  There's spinach, kale and cavallo nero, leeks and a few cabbages.  And some purple sprouting broccoli.  I've nearly cleared the sweetcorn - first time I've tried them, and very good they were.  After that it'll be the runners to clear.  I plan to cut the kale soon, and freeze it.  Likewise the cabbages.

How long will perpetual spinach keep going for?  And can I plant rocket now?  I've been told it can be grown all year round - can that be true?

Perpetual spinach gets a bit sad looking over winter, but then usually perks up for more pickings in the spring.  It eventually goes to seed, but I don't pull it up until I can no longer contain it by regularly picking the tops out.

Rocket now  - dunno

If you already have it growing it usually lasts under cover (i.e. cold greenhouse, polytunnel) over winter.  I'm not sure seeds or young plants will do much now tbh.

Today I pruned some of the currants and prepared them for cuttings. Their all in compost.
I got told it'd be an idea to plant some of the many many many extras down by the local waterway. So during the winter when I'm out walking I'll take them down with a Ho-Mi and plant them in clusters under the trees. I can only hope that they don't get lifted by dogs wanting sticks to chew.

It was all fun and games in the wet until I my shoe didn't even nudge a box. Which caused it to split and flood my shoe and super cosy socks. Standing in the howling wind and rain I didn't mind but that was my limit. So now I'm balling socks and typing this.

Been collecting cardboard from work to cover the veg plot before putting compost or fym down. thought I had loads but have barely covered the small half. Nice that the ground has dried up a bit so I can barrow compost about.(that's not going that far on the ground.) loads to be done but time.... and energy! Hey ho new year new beginnings.

I got out in the garden at home today and got quite a lot done in my raised beds,  The apple arch is pruned and the asparagus and seakale beds each side sit in were cut down, cleared and mulched with manure.  Also did the two strawberry beds and the one with the standard bay and a few other bits in.

The rest are herbs so no manure, but they got a weed and tidy up.

That looks all neat - just the rest of the garden to go and then the plot

Hey ho new year new beginnings.

Quite so   See you on next years thread then  ;)

I got a couple of hours in the garden today. I cleared up the bit next to the bonfire, dug out a few more brambles, pulled up the stray wild raspberries, stripped ivy off the wall at the top of the garden and found a beautiful welsh slate fire place buried in the mess. I'm just missing one of the side pieces so I'm now on a mission to find it. Good job I've got no work at the moment!  :D
