Lice on 2 new chooks - Frontline advice???
« on: January 23, 2011, 21:16 »
Sorry for this, i have read some information on this and other sites/ books but all seem to differ in  opinions.

I have just purchased 4 new chickens for my collection, thought we had checked them fairly thoroughly before we paid, unfortunately we got home and double checked only to find that 2 had got a small lice infestation, too late!.  All hens had close enough contact for me to become concerned about the rest.

I have dusted all with smite but would like to give Frontline a go just tom make sure i nip them in the bud early, just wondered if any one knew if there had been any recent advancements with frontline in relation to chickens.  Is there an egg withdrawal period??  Am i being over cautious? will the smite take care of them alone.

Any advice would be greatly received.

Thanks

I've used kitten strength frontline on my hens and there is no egg withdrawal period.  If you type frontline in the search box there are plenty of discussions on this subject.

We have used Xeno on our flock when we lost a couple to wild bird lice. It worked very well but egg withdrawal was recommended. I have also be told that you should withdraw eggs after using frontline as well as a precaution, especially if you sell the eggs.

Hi Kym

Thanks for that, did look at some of them, just wondered if there had been any advancements recently as all discussions seemed to be a few months old at least.  I am glad you mentioned you have done it with no withdrawal as my vets wont give me any advice.

thanks

My vet prescribes the frontline spray for my chickens but as it isn't licenced for poultry I have to sign for it. I don't have a withdrawal period with this.
Staffies are softer than you think.
