Kohl rabi - advice please
« on: September 16, 2007, 19:06 »
I sowed seed on 9 March and 20 April. I tried to use the first batch late July (4/5 month) but the stems had not thickened. Of the 2nd batch, I was able to use some good globes early Sept (4/5 month again) but only a few have thickened.
Could someone with experience of kohl rabi please advise best sewing times, how long they should take and what conditions might lead to poor yield?

Chard, sprouts and broad beans have done well in the same area.

Seems too early with sowing.  I suggest late May as earliest.  Sowing to harvest is supposedly only 8-12 weeks so they'll appreciate a fast start in warmer soil.

Thank you folks. I shall try harder next year. This vegetable has proved to be more popular in my family than some of the other out-of-the-ordinary vegetables. I am keeping a copy of your replies in my garden folder.

Dear Bernard,

I donno about potash, etc., in my experience it is the easiest brassica to grow, chosing the right variety, pretty much any time of year.
I think you just started with it in the wrong season, because a lot of guys had problems here with them, mine weren,t that good as usual, either.

Treat as for any brassica, and try varieties.  Purple Danube is a good one for tolerance of cold and storage. Superschmelz is bril, it grows huge, that's beyond the point, it lasts out there till you want it, never goes woody, pithy. Can be left till late out there and can be started very early.
