Kohl rabi
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:05 »
I am growing kohl rabi this year year for the first time and some have nice healthy plants ready to go into the allotment.  As they are brassicas and look just like my other brassica plants I am wondering if they need netting to protect them as I have to do for cabbages etc to keep the pigeons off,  and I also put a collar of underlay around cabbages to protect them from root fly.  As the bit you harvest is the swollen stem above ground, maybe a collar would interfere with this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

They require all the protection you would normally give brassics.  Cabbage root fly collars can be used, the swollen part will sit on top.

Planting them as a catch crop with sprouts (as jokey has)  or  PSB is a good idea, as they mature very quickly and they then share the net and make use of the large space between these plants at this time in the year.

I put my kohl rabi in today in two half rows (with collars) , and put over some home made 'cloches' covered in chicken wire.  I've never had much success with sprouts, but I will soon be planting out my cavolo nero so I will put a couple of those in between the rows of kohl rabi and then two half rows of cavolo and net the lot (if that makes sense!)  It's always useful to know what you can grow together, with one veg as a catch crop so thank you all for the advice.

My apologies, Barbarella, but I've just started a similar thread without realising you'd been on the subject last week!

We grow a separate bed of them, and in fact, they're not Mrs G's favourite, but I just love them raw!

They're under netting - they have to be really, and they mature so quickly, I hope to creep down and sow another bed when there's nobody watching..;0)
