Fruit blossom and frost question
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:34 »
Our apple and pear trees have blossomed and the flowers have now gone. My assumption is - that means the fruit has "set".

If we now have a frost is that likely to kill the fruit?

Regards, WG :)

no, the dodgy stage frost wise, is during flowering.
You will get what's called a June drop when the trees drop all the fruit that they can't sustain, so don't panic then ;) It may be bad this year if we don't get some rain.
If you choose to water make sure they have a really really thorough drenching very occasionally, rather than a sprinkle more often.

Our apple tree had hundreds and hundreds of apples when we moved into this house last August, but now there's been literally only about 10 blossom flowers! Do you think the tree exhausted itself last year?  ??? Is there anything we should do? I'm pretty sure we didn't have a frost or anything like that

some varieties of apple tend fruit every other year...google bi-ennial fruiting.
They exhaust them selves as you say, so rest the next year.
You can help by doing some extra thinning after the June drop...to make sure they don't bear to much fruit.
